Well, as the title suggests I'm on a mission to see the ever elusive Anna Netrebko in a live performance, and not on one of the many recordings I possess of her - which may suggest that I have a rather myopic view of the musical world that cxouldn't be further from the truth.
Ever since I was a small child music has played a large role in my life, beginning with the first record I ever bought, Stu Francis' "Ooh I Could Crush A Grape!", to the most recent, PJ Harvey's "White Chalk". So where does Anna Netrebko fit into a musical CV that includes The Lemonheads, Bruce Springsteen and The Blake Babies? Slap bang in the middle, because the older I get the more the definitions of what I like are becoming ever more blurred where I no longer consider myself to be a fan of this or that type of music, but I simply am a lover of music, from Oumou Sangre, to Le Vibrazioni to Beethoven. Music is universal, for all, and I'm thankful that I now understand this.
So Anna Netrebko has become a kind of Holy Grail, beginning with an excerpt of her singing on an S4C documentary on Carlo Rizzi I was immediately struck by the soul touching timbre of her voice (apologies for the melodramatic phrase) and set out to buy the Salzburg Traviatta and it is easily the most affecting operatic performance I have seen to date - and from there I decided I had to see her live. Unfortunately bronchitis intervened earlier this year, so I've taken a gamble on the Opera de Bastile Bellini this coming May / June, and if that fails then I'll try and try again until I get to see, and more importantly hear, a voice that once stopped me in my tracks...
